Saint: I bring you the heads of the three Republicans. Do you think you can carry this without dropping it, or otherwise screwing up? Obama: Are you kidding, lady? I'm a Democrat! Punk: Which is why she asked.
Ron Paul is the only one of them that hasn’t shot himself in the foot. He has no chance of winning the nomination, but despite the GOP’s “anyone but Romney” rhetoric, they really mean “anyone but Paul.”
I plunked one of these “lefty media industrial complex” guys down in front of the CNN website and asked him to point out where the bias was… Turns out all the bias was in the headlines (which I had to concede; they were trying for sensationalist to get people to read them). He couldn’t find anything in the stories.
First, he’s not really a Republican and, second, have you looked as his polls? In reality there’s only one candidate left. It’s all over except for the Sarah Palin explosion coming at the convention.
I don’t think it’s so much Obama, as the entire Democratic party in the last couple decades, that’s been drawing and quartering every issue to their disadvantage. A lot of it is “leading from the rear” with TOO MUCH ‘compromise". Leaving the field of battle to the enemy, before anyone shows up, isn’t the “leadership” the PARTY should be coming up with.
Of course he should have said “to whoever my Republican Nominee might be”. The object of the preposition is the entire clause, and “whoever” is the subject of the verb phrase “might be”. In an older style, now obsolete, one could say “to him, whoever…”, where “him” is the object of the preposition. The use of “whomever” here is probably an instance of what’s called hypercorrection. I know that almost none of you will care, and in the large scheme of things it may not matter much, but there it is, anyway, for what it’s worth.
La Terreur, the “Nation Razor” has been at work and has, like Saint-Just and Robespierre been turned upon its protagonists, but no…not by the guillotine, though how much more sweet, deserving, and lasting such justice would have been…it has only been in effigy by the sharpened razor point (as it should be in America) of a great commentators pen.
Well since my first post on this thread got Borked by the Lefties in here who hate hearing anything from outside their echo chamber, Let me just say that Oliphant is being amazingly honest about how Democrat the Mainstream Media is, and how much power they really think they have.
Seriously, The Left really thinks they just handed Obama all three heads of the Republicans on a platter? Just the sheer vanity at the base of that presumption is amazing. It’s pretty cool, actually, because when “Politics Present” doesn’t ultimately conform to the image they manufacture for consumption, they all lose their minds over it. That’s just a blast to watch. Yes, this going to be a very good year, indeed.
Of course I’m right. The underlying clause is “My Republican Nominee might be whoever”, where “whoever” is a predicate nominative (at least in my terminological system), and therefore in the subjective case. Would you say, “Give it to whomever owns the car?” No, of course, it should be “Give it to whoever owns the car.” The principle is the same — the object of the preposition is the whole clause. Here is the explanation from the Harbrace College Handbook: “The subject of a clause takes the subjective case even when the whole clause is the object of a verb or a preposition.” And here are their examples, with their comments: 1. “He will employ whoever is willing to work. [”Whoever" is the subject of “is willing”. The whole clause “whoever is willing to work” is the direct object of “will employ.] 2. He has respect for whoever is in power. [”Whoever" is the subject of “is”. The complete clause “whoever is in power” is the object of the preposition “for”.]
While I’m on the subject, Fowler’s Modern English Usage has a good article. He includes such examples of mistaken usage as “Speculation is still rife as to whom will captain the English side to Australia” and “There has been some speculation as to whom the fifth representative from South Africa will be.” This is a close parallel to the passage in question. Fowler goes on to say “The mistake is a bad one, but fortunately so elementary that it is nearly confined to sports-reporters….”
I just hate it when people run and hide from an argument by deleting their posts, so that the posts of the other side are just left hanging. Donald William, where did you go?

Sven, Sven… it’s a political cartoon. You know, expressing the artist’s opinion? It’s not a new thing; you should be familiar with the concept.

The islamic deity is the same as the christian one. I suspect you’re unfamiliar with him as well.

If there’s a Santorum explosion at the Republican convention this year, well… it won’t be the first time. Just the first time in public view.

“I’m well-acquainted with the tenets of islam.”
The tenets and the deity are not one and the same. Of course, Obama is neither a Kenyan nor a Muslim, so it’s irrelevant anyway.

I think she’s learned her lesson. Palin’s the one who is still deluded enough to give it a try. I wish her well!

Isn’t there a Three Stooges movie coming out? If they had waited a few months longer to make it, I know who be ideal for the lead roles.
