And there are those who make up for the ones who make up for others who don’t have a thought in their head.

There are thoughts, and then there are thoughts.

“Great belch” is one. “Can I beat it” is another. “I’d like to get into her pants” is a third.

And, of course, the average is pulled WAY down by those who simply sit in front of their TV all day.

“They haven’t got Brains, any of them, only grey fluff that’s blown into their heads by mistake, and they don’t Think.” — Eeyore

Of course there’s nothing valuable to be learned from studying how our brains work, how thoughts are formed and processed. Of course it’s a waste of money for neurologists to measure brain activity, and quantify discrete thoughts (however they defined them, in the study). And of course it’s a given that the scientists’ purpose was to provide an answer to a trivia question, “How many thoughts does a person average on a daily basis?”

Why should we bother understanding how we think? It’s not like we need a manual or anything to DO it…

I’m also reminded of Albert and Hound Dog’s “thinking Contests” in Pogo Possum.

Albert: “I’m thinking of all the popcorn in the world. Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop…”Hound Dog: “Oh yeah? Well I’M thinking of all the grains of salt on all the popcorn in the world! At an average of 27 grains on each pop, I’m out-thinking you hannover fish!”Albert: “FOUL! Your salt is on MY popcorn, so all them thoughts belongs in MY column!”Hound Dog: “Now I’m thinking about (hic) baby spiders, and (hic) there’s NOTHIN’ (hic) more (hic) numerabobble than (hic) baby spiders… (hic)Albert: “Judges, you ain’t countin’ them hiccups as thoughts, are you? They’s automatic, and they don’t count.”Hound Dog: “OF COURSE (hic) they counts! (hic) I’m (hic) thinkin’ (hic) of (hic) each (hic) one (hic) individual (hic) (hic) (hic)…”Albert: “Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!…”Hound Dog: "(HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) (HIC!) …

There are 86,400 seconds in a day, so most of those thoughts would be second thoughts.

I think I thought…A fleeting idea…But my eye was caught….By a lingering fear…That all thoughts are lost…As quick as they come…And the inevitable cost…Not to all but to some…Is that with thoughts never shared…We live alone in our mind…And can never compare…How we all are of a kind…

Careful, Americans might be offended by being accused of “thinking” — isn’t that what we have accused Bill Clinton and Obama of doing far too much of?
