We asked our tax consultant about listing the family cat. He told us “no” in no uncertain terms. Maybe if we’d named her some standard name like “Linda” or even “Lucretia” instead of “Madam MROW”.

Who is the tax accountant speaking to? If the dog is a border collie, then it does make sense. My dad’s collie was smarter than most of our neighbors.

True Service Dogs that are trained and certified and assist their human can be tax deductions ( Food, vet, etc). Check with your tax preparer. Not sure about other True service animals (There are mini service horses and other things).

And of course people can’t use their dog to avoid taxes, yet they, by way of their churches, use their god to avoid taxes all the time.

I’ve had cats named Annie and Maxx. Also Mua and Stormy. The only name that may raise eyebrows would be Snowball and Spooky.

Just because you’re your dog’s dad doesn’t make him your dependent. But I’m sure some people keep trying.
