That’s how my son’s last house was, they had a baby monitor in the kids’ rooms! They had gates at the top and bottom of the stairs and would go up and get the kids.
Seems like John did a little “not enough sleep” walking to a better rest. Frankly, if he were my Dentist, I would appreciate him being wide awake and good to go when he’s drilling in my mouth.
Amazing to read the various takes from everyone reading the same comic. Humans are so messed up. I also agree that it is a fictional “funny paper” entry and to make comments on how they “should” behave or how the houses where they live are designed is just plain vapid and irrelevant. But that’s just me!
Seems pretty dumb to put a sick kid into bed with you. No one’s going to sleep, and both parents are going to end up sick (including John because he’s there when April coughs and sniffles all over the place, yuck!). Then Ellie’s going to spend a week or more exasperated and exhausted because she’s sick and everyone still expects her to cook, clean, and take care of them.
John: April, it is the middle of the night! What is wrong?
April: My stomach hurts, I want Mom.
Master bedroom
Elly{groggily}: You are already up, why can’t you help?
John: She asked for you. Let me back under the covers, will you?

Elly looks at clockElly: Sheesh, it is 2 in the morning? Why are kids always sick at 0200 hours? April just probably ate too much dessert. She will soon get it out of her system.
BARF!
Elly: I didn’t mean that quite the way it sounded!

April’s bed
Elly I think the worst is over April, but let me know if anything else happens.
April{weakly}: OK, thanks.
Elly goes into hall
Elly: Poor little kid.
One of April’s stuffed toys comes to life and shoves her
Hobbes: YECH! There is nothing worse than a sick roommate! Face that way!

I like the horrified look on Elly’s face in the 3rd to last panel, as she realizes that John is playing the “I have to go to work tomorrow” card.

Y’know, I can almost smell John’s BO through the computer screen!!
BTW, why is the master bedroom a floor apart from the room of a sick toddler who can easily fall down the stairs trying to get to her parents??

Well, I think John was wise to vacate; he gets to sleep more soundly, and hopefully won’t be taking her cold into work with him to be shared around.

Won’t he catch what she has?

When my son is sick, he comes to dad. Mom is not his cup of tea when he is sick.

We’re still in the vein of “selfish” John. Yet another indication of how angry Lynn was at Rod.

When I was sick, I was never allowed to sleep with my parents. I had to tough it out. April, you are blessed with caring parents; never forget it.

I’m amused at the thought of John having to fit into a toddler/child size bed.

First he got a fish hook in his hand; now he is exposing himself to whatever April has contracted. John has shown terrifically poor judgement.

My mom used to lay on the couch with us, because god forbid we should disturb my father.

He’ll be the next one with a cold, catching it from her bed and stuffed animals.

HE gets to sleep leaving his wife with a sick kid? Selfish
