My landline still requires a 1 for most of the people I call and it won’t let me add it to numbers on the caller ID, so I have to dial the whole thing.
Most places you still have to dial the “1”, which is now called the Country Code, outside of your area. To call other countries, you begin the call with their Country Code. To make things even more confusing, the United States and Canada share the same Country Code.
I have never completely gotten over the annoyance of having to dial the area code on my cellphone for a call in the same area code as my phone number.
Area codes were first assigned based on number of phones in the area (to make it faster to dial the number). NYC-212, DC-202, LA-213. while low populated western states would have 8—-, 900 #.
We still need to do that from our work (US Government) phones when the call is outside our area code. 9+1+area code+number. Within our area code, it’s just 9+area code+number.
Then everybody in the 707 area code, which is a rather large chunk of northwestern California, is a Plugger. I for one have to dial 1 before making a local call on a land line. They did this because it was the only way to get 988 to work as the Suicide Prevention Lifeline emergency number.

My cell phone company has informed me that all numers in my contacts including local numbers must include area codes.

Sometimes I dial the 1, sometimes I don’t. If it’s really a “smart-phone” it’ll figure it out.

Pluggers remember why you had to dial 1.

Unless you’re a world traveler, not in the U.S. but making a call to the U.S. – you may not be a plugger

My phone only allows ten digits, so prefacing with “1” is right out.

It’s called “Habit”.

LOL… most domestic websites won’t even take a ‘1’ in front of your phone number.

Are you serious — I really don’t have to dial (enter) one anymore?

Dual area code areas still have to dial 1 first.

We have to here- our area code is full and the phone co. can’t figure out what to do. I think we ran out of numbers also. . . . awwww!

I was guilty of that. Also, checking settings for how to change my phone to Daylight Time.

If you spend way too much of your time commenting on other Pluggers’ commenters comments, you’re a Plugger.

We still do in GA on a land line, but not on a cellphone.

I just tried dialing a number yesterday and it was refused. Told me I had to dial 1 before it. It was for a town about 100 miles away.

Now you have to dial one no matter who or where you are calling. I have to dial one if I’m in my house and calling my land line from my cell phone.

Those flip phones are getting harder to find. Verizon apparently does not carry them any more.
