Well, the fix was in, and the Free Silver movement [increased money supply & credit] never stood a real chance.
Corporate America was consolidating its hold, and most populist resistance efforts were siphoned off into the free silver movement canard, which crashed the economy and paved the way for Grover’s triumphant return.
Lassize fair peaked at this time, and workers and farmers had virtually no way to borrow money at reasonable rates.
Only fools and villains advocate the gold standard.
A bit more than 200,000 metric tonnes have mined throughout history by one estimate. That’s 200,000,000 kg. or 200 billion grams.
Current price per gram is $60 so the net value of all that gold would be a mere $12 trillion
With 8 billion people that means about $1500 per person.
Which is a fantasy number because the gold is certainly not distributed equally, which is just fine with the clowns who propose the gold standard. They are firm believers in “those who have the gold make the rules.” They may speak of fairness, but only rarely practice it.
The pictures from the Scopes trial are pathetic. Two old men in shirt sleeves, soaked in sweat, fans in hand, arguing at a contrived trial that in the end accomplished almost nothing. Jennings won but was humiliated and died 5 days later, Scopes was fined $100, and it would take until 1968 before the Constitutional issues were resolved.
Har! 22 and 24 are channeling Statler and Waldorf! Capital!
I suppose it would be leaden and small minded to note that the Scopes Trial wasn’t about the validity of Mr Darwin’s theories, but about whether Scopes had violated a state law making it illegal to teach it in public schools. Of which Mr Scopes was assuredly guilty of. (Never mind that the law in question was beyond idiotic.)

We should absolutely eliminate fiat currency and back all currency with Gold and/or silver. Inflation would go away.
