I thought all of that was incidental to Cuisses de grenouille

The school cook better not take the frogs’ legs for the lunch menu. (I found some in a different grocery store on a day off from the grocery store at which I’m already employed, got them the following week, and they weren’t that bad at all. Cost me $19.99, but still not bad of a taste.)

Do grade-school kids dissect frogs these days … have they ever? I never dissected anything until 11th grade biology (in 1961), and then only preserved specimens (worm, grasshopper, frog, fetal pig, and cat, and only the last gave me pause)

I don’t think they dissect real frogs nowadays. When we did that in biology, when I was a young thing, I was the only girl who didn’t screech in horror.

I was so good at this that we (I and my partner) watched the heart beat for almost 2 minutes. But nowadays according to my grand daughter they do it on the computer at her school.

When we did it, the frog was pinned to a tray covered in some tarry substance. We made a small tar ball and shoved it into the frog then told the teacher our frog had a cancer.

But you could practice on the real thing if you collected some homeless folk. They are easy to catch as well, and as a bonus would not get your feet wet catching them.

For the final exam there were rows of frogs & squid in various stages of disassembly. We had to provide sketches with a parts list.

When we disected frogs, one boy in our class offered to ‘kill’ all the frogs for the rest of us. I often wonder what became of him.

We dissected grasshoppers in 10th grade bio, and teamed up to dissect frogs because there were only so many to go around. I remember one kid in particular literally turned green at the sight of the organs and had to be taken away by the teacher. I’ve never before or since seen anyone turn that shade of color.

Sort of sad that dissecting is required. Should be an optional assignment at best unless of course Biology is your major…..
