Yeh, but just think, you may earn all that back in just about 20 or 30 years!

Well, it cost (in 1830) $3,000 to professionally print and publish 5,000 copies of The Book of Mormon. That’s $$97,555.43 in 2023. It’s still a lot of money nonetheless.

She can self publish through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing for free. That’s how I published my books.

I had a friend who did this. I’m pretty sure she didn’t have thousands to spend on it. I think she did it through Amazon. Now you have me curious about what self-publishing entails and costs. Not that I have plans to write anything. No patience and not much to say that anyone would be interested in. LOL

As others have said, self-publishing today isn’t what it was years ago. Now you can self-publish and then print individual copies for as little as $5.00 (depending on size of manuscript and whether you have interior color, of course). I wrote a few things that I wanted to share with a select number of friends and family, self-published them, and now they’re available for sale to anyone who bothers to go to that website (not that selling them was my goal).

She could make an e-book for a lot less and sell it on Amazon Kindle.

I feel about self-published authors much the same way as I feel about some poets who read aloud their works in public – they may have other undesirable habits. /s

I remember a New Yorker cartoon where a couple in the foreground is seen at a classy up-scale cocktail party, holding their martinis. He looks around and says to her “Everyone here is self-published”.

I’ve self-published 2 novels through Amazon. It’s not hard and doesn’t cost you a penny. A lot of authors use self publishing. No rejections, but no big time money deals either.

There’s a print on demand option I think Amazon offers for self-publishing. I think it’s extremely cheap.

It costs only a few dollars per month to put it up on a Web site — and you can use the site for lots of other stuff.

And if you hypertext it yourself, it will come out much better than the garbage put out by self-styled “Web designers” who plug your content into a fitsall template that doesn’t even validate.

For a book, you need learn only a few tags, such as paragraph break and header1, header2, etc.   Don’t specify too much.   Dithering over which font to use?   Let the reader read in the font that he considers easy to read.
