Like the wooden mallet at a circus game, no one has yet hit hard enough to ring the bell. Without the metal sledge hammers to knock tent posts into the ground, Republicans can’t claim secure footing for their so-called big-tent party.
It’s a strange position from a President who provoked a war to seize territory from Mexico. I would think that as a Democrat, James Knox Polk would provoke another war and seize the House with another Speaker. He would compromise, as he did with Britain for a settlement like the Oregon Territory.
Why won’t the “Freedom” caucus vote for McCarthy despite all of his promises to them. Easy. They don’t trust him. McCarthy will simply claim his promises were made under duress and thus, he doesn’t have to keep them.
And by the way — my prediction—a terrible Republican becomes speaker, no matter who, but the extreme faction (of the extreme) have learned what kind of power they can exert—no good for the country.
Hooray! The Opera is back! (Always popular, opera is, no matter what the cartoons say.) —As for your question, Mr Carroll, the real question is: who in his or her right mind would volunteer for a (brief but bruising) career of humiliation? All in the service of a party which seems not to have any policy positions at all, apart from the general idea that wealthy people don’t have enough money and poor people don’t have enough.
Oh, they may yammer on about the dangers of “an open border”, but I have yet to hear a syllable of a proposal about what to do about it. Even the fantasies about “a wall” have somehow lost their charm.
(By the way, are you any kin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton?)
Brian, glad you’re back! Hope it’s for a long time.
Hard to guess the outcome — probably gonna be Kevin as an interim. Nothing will get done, but it wasn’t going to anyway. Republicans will then be able to get on with their ‘investigations’. Since inflation is coming down, they will scream that it’s because Republicans are in control of the House.
.
In any case, it’s amusing that Newt is all butt hurt because some Republicans won’t compromise like he wants them to.

Congress will be a real circus. There will be more fights and near fights like the ones over Kevin McCarthy’s vote for speaker. Buy stock in popcorn.

That must be why he’s on the 11¢ Presidential postage stamp. Which, to be fair, had no utility at all and is rather rare in used condition.
