When my mom went grocery shopping, she’s leave me by the comic book rack and pick me up an hour later.

Hubby and me have quite the collection of comic albums. It’s the one thing I can always buy for him when I want to surprise him.

When we were kids, there was a news stand in the same building as our doctor and dentist offices. Anytime one of us had an appointment we each got to pick out a comic. (I have three siblings and mom never left anyone at home so that was a lot of comics.) When I had kids, I continued the tradition— sort of. No news stand at the kids’ doctor’s office, but I would often stop by a comic shop on my lunch break from work. Most of the local comic shop owners got to recognize me. It wasn’t difficult. There weren’t too many middle-aged women looking for old Charltons and other obscure stuff.

My wife’s first husband was into Marvel. I am into DC. I have outlasted him, but she is done after me. Said something about ‘done training husbands’. I went, “I’m trained?” “Oh, no, not you, dear.”

My wife has never bought me a comic book, but she did once buy me a Deluxe Reissue Edition of the three series of 1960s Topps Batman cards. This would have been around 1989, when the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton was released.

My husband has a Batman comic book from the 1970s/80s autographed by the writer and mentioning that husband was the prototype for the villain in it name of villain is husband’s first and last names reversed. We went to college with him and were all on the yearbook (along with friend’s wife) together as editors.
