If she really knew Baldo at all, she would have been expecting that answer.

It was the wrong question, a question that should never be asked in high school. I had a girl friend in 11th grade who asked that (with “hint hint” in her intonation). Within a week, I had broken up with her in terror.

That girl is way too young to be thinking about anybody’s “marriage”! And besides. She knows he’ll be in the dog house if he says no!

“Do I see us getting married?” “Do you mean to each other?”

“It could happen” seems like it would be a nice, safe answer.

I got married when I was 18….. a mistake? Probably…. how did it work out??… I’m married 58 years, and think it was a great ride…. but I still think I was stupid to do it so young!

I met husband when we were in college. I was an editor on the yearbook and he was dating another editor on same. I had come up the idea of a “birthday club” for those on the yearbook. I would bake a cake once month and add the names of all those on the yearbook whose birthday was that month. One month he came to the meeting/party with his girlfriend (also and editor) and when he mentioned it was his birthday that month I added his name to the cake. We also knew each other from a creative class we were both in during my second/his third year in college.

My being nice and adding him to the cake greatly impressed him. We started going out to the movies together as we both love movies, knowing that nothing could come of it as I am Jewish and he is Italian and Roman Catholic. We dated for 4 years then were engaged for 2 years – yes, there were bets the marriage would only last a year (to follow the halving pattern).

I never asked him if we would be getting married or when – we just went along as we were having fun until it felt right to do so. Married over 40 years now and still going to the movies every week – though since Covid it is a movie on the living room TV, more recently we started going to Friday night midnight movie as we did in college also (first midnight movie in our home series of same was, of course, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, the following weeks have been Marx Brothers movies).
