I love the different expressions on Calvin and Hobbes’s face. Calvin is furious with Hobbes and Hobbes is loving the chase. He could easily beat Calvin in a fight but he’s letting Calvin chase him. Calvin is working off his anger in the chase and Hobbes is loving it.
Hobbes considers himself a spy. He’s not so much a spy as a manipulative friend. He really did act as a spy the time when Susie kidnapped him in retaliation for Calvin and Hobbes stealing her doll.
Calvin: This is a sad day for the GROSS Club! First Tiger Hobbes a willing captive of the enemy.
Hobbes: It may interest you to know that, when I had gained Susie’s confidence, I did some spying.
Calvin: Spying? You were a spy?
Hobbes: While Susie’s back was turned, I read her diary.
Calvin: Wow! Deep in enemy territory, you intercepted a secret message! What did it say?
Yeah, about the logos…I always found it amusing that spies, who survive on anonymity and stealth get tripped up by the humongous “bad guy” ring they’re wearing that the whole world can see.
Mom and Dad need to keep an eye on Calvin. His ‘alter ego’, Hobbes, is becoming dominant. So, it was Calvin composing all that mail and them mailing to himself. Hmmm…
Why has no one ever seen an adult Calvin? With BAD, BPD, and apparently some serious Schizophrenic tendencies, he must be in a nice room with padded walls somewhere. I mean, his folks must’ve done some serious tripping back in the day. They seem alright, no sign of abuse or whatever, but that kid…
This was definitely was one of Watterson’s best arcs. I liked the misdirection in Monday’s strip. And yesterday and Wednesday’s episodes really toyed with the reality of the premise.

Hobbes couldn’t have ACTUALLY done the job of composing the mystery letters, so we’re left to conclude that Calvin sent the insults to himself.

Hobbes is right, nothing is more ominous than a skull logo.

You can tell a really good spy by not suspecting for a moment that he is one.

My dog did the same thing to me once. But he gave himself away when he kept sneaking into the office for stamps.

Holy hell, people are overanalyzing this comedic comic strip way too much. Ever heard of “suspension of disbelief?” Ever heard of “cartoon logic?”

Hobbes can indeed be a pretty good spy, especially for G.R.O.S.S… https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1990/09/08

No surprise he thinks that since he drew them.
