Having children is one of the hardest things that I ever had to do. “Do as I say, not as I do,” is NOT an option. You are under the microscope 24/7. You have to “clean up your act” and keep it clean.
We picked our battles with our children carefully. How they dressed or wore their hair was not worth fighting over. Things like drinking and driving was worth emphasizing.
So for many years I had a “zero tolerance” policy in regard to myself. If we went out to dinner and I had so much as a glass of wine, I would make a show of handing over the car keys to my wife. It worked, we got a couple of calls where our sons told us that they were going to “crash” at a friend’s house.
I still hold to this policy today and violate it ONLY for religious purposes. We have Jewish friends who invite us to the Passover Seder. I have two glasses of wine over a period of about 6 hours with a ton of food. I figure I’m safe.
I taught high school for a few years, and it always amazed me how hard my students worked to pretend not to care. Most of them did, but they didn’t dare show it. It’s just something most teenagers do.

Not so great an ability if the kid gets expelled from school, or worse.

Now that my two girls have moved out, I have a “man cave”. I keep telling my wife I want a sign that says “No girlz allowed, except for cleaning”.
