How is it making students richer when it is merely paying off debt that attending college has gotten them into? They don’t actually get cash money. Resident tuition at the University of Washington is $12,076 for 9 months and that doesn’t include room and board. $10,000 isn’t exactly a “get out of college free” card.

The average cost of college (tuition room and board) in 1977 when Bok would have been 25) was $2,411 and $3101 four years later. Adjusted for inflation this is an average of $11,468 and (per www.usinflationcalculator.com). In 2022, the in-state public college average for TR&B was $27,330 per year. Four years of college today averages roughly $109,320 and four years in Bok’s day $45,872. That’s 2.3 times the cost Bok would have spent. Putting it all in perspective the $10,000 forgiveness makes it now only 2.1 times the cost—not much of a subsidy of the cost of college by the government. The way Bok and rest are howling you’d think Biden is giving away the farm. Get a clue Bok.

Baghdad Bok thinks the taxpayers should only help billionaires and corporations, instead of everyday people struggling to pay for their education loans.

This appears to be the RW meme of the “weak”.

I agree with Chip, the debt forgiveness will, if anything, encourage colleges to charge more. The most realistic solution is to allow students to wipe out student debt through bankruptcy and take back prior loan money from colleges if this step is used.

More companies used to provide tuition reimbursement for their employees, but as corporate tax rates have gone down, the need for corporations to invest in their employees and the future of the company to lower tax liability has diminished.

Does Chip realize that $10,000 won’t cover one semester at most State Universities? Probably won’t cover the interest charges on the average student loans.

@bokbluster – the impact is not at Universities, it’s with millions of PEOPLE who will now…

Trickle down from Billionaires or Trickle AROUND from millions of college students who when they get a little windfall will spend it on rent, food, medicine…

Too bad the money doesn’t go to rich people so corrupt republicans can get kickbacks to run on.

Why have we been loan-sharking 18-year-olds? It’s immoral and disgusting.

They aren’t even allowed to file for bankruptcy. Trump declared bankruptcy FOUR TIMES and didn’t even have to sell things to pay his creditors. He just stiffed them.

The “billionaire” can get his debts removed. The student who can’t pay his rent because of legal loan-sharking can’t.

Having an adult child who benefitted from the 10k debt forgiveness, she will now be able to buy a good used car, or make a down payment on a home. What is wrong with that? chip

Chip hasn’t read the bill. The main people being helped by this legislation are people far from the 1 or even 10 percent top money receivers. Oh, right, that’s the problem Republicans have with this bill, is it helps people that are far from being rich campaign donors.
