Totally accurate, Brian! We USED to be “The UNITED States”, but now we’ve become "The UNITED (except for "Those people, you know, the Brown people, and the Black people, and the Gay people, and the Female people and the people who worship a different version of God, and Any People who are in ANY OTHER WAY different from US!) States.
I don’t think I ever saw you do a local issue cartoon. I used to subscribe to Nextdoor, but found it annoying.
Personally I think “NIMBYs” is the Achilles Heel of many progressives and liberals. Yep, we want housing for the homeless and low income housing, but um, not in our neighborhood. Basically let someone else bare the burden of the things we want.
In my old neighborhood (in Dallas, Texas), apparently it IS legal to kill homeless people. Several years ago, a neighbor had placed some old refrigerators out by the curb. During the night, he heard a noise, and saw a homeless man rummaging around the curbside junk, maybe looking for scrap metal to sell. From his upstairs window, my neighbor shot the man, killing him. At his trial, he pleaded self-defense, and his lawyer argued that the neighborhood (my neighborhood!) was so dangerous that, when a person hears a suspicious noise, it’s best to just shoot out your window at anything that moves. The jury must have agreed: It acquitted the defendant.
Note that the stranger was not in the man’s house, or even close to it. He was between the sidewalk and the street— a sidewalk I have walked on many, many times. There was no testimony presented that the homeless man threatened the resident in any way— only that the shooter “felt” threatened.
About the neighborhood, I might note that it was and is a very diverse neighborhood, both ethnically and economically, but property values have shot up in recent years (as they have in many Dallas neighborhoods).

Any sentance starting, “I’m not racist but…” is about to be a proclamation of bigotry.

I’ll say this about our current politics: At least Mr. Carroll won’t lack material.
