In the US if it is not a pit viper it is probably not venomous. All you have to do is get really close and look for the pit in its nose. Closer… closer….

That’s right Arlo, You don’t have to rely on your own learned knowledge. You just need to have a smart phone. No more spending wasted time learning or looking things up.

We believe what we want to believe and someone, somewhere on the Internet will agree with us, someone else will disagree. Checking the source helps. For example, if something is tied to David Huie Green, check other sources, even regarding this statement.

I live in Western Washington, the only place in the contiguous states without venomous snakes. Just yesterday I saw the cutest little baby garter snake out in the open who didn’t slither away when I placed my hand near, just lunged at it a little.

Funny how what we trust always overrides reality—unless they happen to agree. Maxwell King’s biography of Fred Rogers details his very, very busy life—and when he went straight out of college to work for NBC television in NYC (Kate Smith Hour, NBC Opera Theater, etc.), there was never again time in his career for anything but television . .

The venomous snakes in the USA have triangular heads. The Coral is the exception and has a black nose. Snakes, if given a chance, will get away from you, unless you surprise them or they are guarding a clutch of eggs.

Poisonous snakes have a triangular head, non-poisonous do not. At least that was my training in the distant past. I steer clear of them all.

I just lived this strip. I had a rat snake in my yard a few days ago. It sent me scrambling to the Internet so I could prove to my wife it was beneficial not poisonous.

Fred Rogers was not a Navy SEAL, but Bob Ross was a drill sergeant in the US Air Force.

I’m always amused (amazed? depressed?) by the misinformation offered on social apps like NextDoor when someone posts a picture of a snake or other animal they’ve seen and asks for help in identifying it. People who have no idea what it is feel compelled to offer an opinion. A picture of a common garter snake a few weeks ago brought ID’s of rattlesnake and cottonmouth, despite the fact that the head looked nothing like a viper, and cottonmouths don’t breed anywhere within 500 miles or more from where we live.

Tip: If it is really neat or cute and just too good to be true on FB, it isn’t true. No Mr. Rogers wasn’t a Navy Seal and he didn’t save Bob Keeshan (Capt. Kangaroo) during WWII. It made for a heart warming story that one of the two children’s show leads saved the other but it wasn’t true. Too good to be true.

Fred rogers was the ultimate navy seal spec-op green beret delta marine. He founded the University of Badassery that Chuck Norris is an alumni of. Bob ross was an instructor there and taught the deadly ninja art of camouflage and ambush tactics. Captain Kangaroo was an K-9 instructor and that’s why he worked so well with Mr. Moose and bunny rabbit. These guys were so tough they had to become mild mannered or risk being whacked by the CIA.Its all on wikapedia before it was deleted.I heard it from my cousin who knew a guy in the coast guard who patrolled around the island the university was built on. ;-)

The “internet” will tell you a LOT of things, Arlo. Much of which is not true or at least “shaded.”

Just saying, I heard this story about Rogers and Keeshan decades ago, way before computers and social media.I have always believed it to be true. I don’t think such a fabrication could have escaped scrutiny even way back then. As a kid, I loved the Captain Kangaroo show.Especially at Christmas. My how times have changed.

The “Internet” doesn’t tell you anything. Specific sources that happen to publish on the Internet tell you stuff. That’s like saying dead tree publishing tells you crazy stuff because of the National Enquirer. The problem is people who don’t know how to evaluate sources for credibility, not that the sources happen to be printed in pixels instead of ink on wood pulp.

Don’t know if it just me or not but it seems that Arlo and Janis seem to be bickering a lot the last couple of weeks. I think they need a trip to see that kids and Meg and Gus to get away from just being home and then they will be happier with each other. When couples start to bicker a lot it starts to turn ugly and goes into arguing 24/7 and that is not good for a marriage, trust me I have been in that situation 2 1/2 years ago.
