“Hey Alexa, remind me in two years to check and see if OJ’s followed up with the strip she foreshadowed.”

Spoilers are unwelcoming aggressiveness, foreshadows are welcoming gracefulness

I’ve sometimes been accused of issuing spoilers on my favourite strip Calvin and Hobbes. They are unintentional. I am either replying to a question someone asks about what’s going to happen or correcting someone’s wrong guess. I love reading these Calvin and Hobbes reprints as I was in my twenties for most of the decade when that marvellous strip was originally published.

It’s OK to like both, one of the two, or neither.

You don’t realize that something that happens in a book or movie was foreshadowing until something else happens later. A few examples: In The Passion of the Christ, when Jesus is going thru the process of being arrested, a man is hammering at a piece of wood which foreshadows the hammering of nails at the Crucifixion. That’s probably not the best example as anyone would know the crucifixion was coming.

Anybody ever watch the Breaking Bad series? Remember the episode where the air traffic guy caused two planes to crash in the air and of course, there was debris everywhere? One thing you saw was a child’s stuffed toy (I want to say a bunny) was missing it’s right eyeball and and that side of it was messed up. In a later episode, the one drug lord, Gus Fring got the right side of his face blown off in an explosion and his eyeball was hanging off shudder.

In my Best Sellers class, we watched The Godfather. They were showing orange juice in one scene which our teacher pointed out foreshadowing the death of Marlon Brando’s character. For those that have seen it, you’ll remember he dropped dead chasing his grandson around and had a slice of orange in his mouth, making him look kind of like a monkey.

So foreshadowing can happen either in the fictional world or it can happen in the universe of the story. Next logical question, can we assume that a world and the universe are the same thing? Seems to me that a universe can contain billions of worlds according to Carl Sagan.

Foreshadowing and red herrings go hand-in-hand.
