This particular cartoon is topical due to the massacre of grade-school children in Uvalde, but it calls attention to just one symptom of a much larger problem: big corporate money in politics, legitimized by the US Supreme Court in its notorious Citizens United decision, which equated corporations with people and free spending with free speech. If “Justice” Alito is looking for a “wrongly decided” precedent that deserves to be overturned, he can start with one in which he himself had a hand.
PS: Corporations, of course, are supposed to be responsive to their stockholders. Foreigners (especially foreign governments) are prohibited by law from contributing to American political candidates. They are not, however, prohibited from holding stock in American companies, so who knows whose water those corporate campaign contributions are carrying?
The NRA is a tax exempt non- profit organization. The money that they should pay in taxes, a bunch, they feed to friendly $$$politicians. Neither Democrats nor Republicans want to change the tax laws, as they all get plenty of benefit just the way things are, thank you.
