Congress needs to again allow student loan debt discharged thru bankruptcy. It was until the Post ran a story in the ‘90s on two med students that bragged they intended to avoid payment thru bankruptcy when they graduated. Although very few were doing this cheat, the hysterical congress changed the law…meaning thousands of people that were bad risks got bad loans from bad lenders who knew they’d eventually be paid.

Many young women and men join the military with a goal of earning the GI Bill to help pay for their education. Is that incentive benefit being lost in this debacle?

Hmmm…..you don’t suppose there is some way to find out how many college students get financial aid do you?

    https://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=31

Looking there it appears that 85-90% of (four year degree) students get financial aid now.

That would mean 10-15% are the folks Mike is representing here.

10-15%…..that isn’t over 50%. So its not the bulk of the population. But helping the bulk of the population would CLEARLY be the wrong thing to do. Because Mike says so.

This will be known as the Ivy League Endowment Bailout. These students knew in advance how much debt they were incurring and to be able to walk away from it is just insane. At the very least it should be taxable income to them – and preferably the first 20,000, or 50000 could not be forgiven.

That the best you got, Lester?

Those parents who scrimp and scrape take advantage of all kinds of programs, just like everyone else. Or are you trying to imply that they turn down financial assistance after scrimping and scraping?

“No, no, I couldn’t possibly accept a beneficial program for my child, goodness no!”

The even sadder thing is that kids are often expected, if not forced, to go to college since “it’s the only way to be successful” – not a true statement. It is true that, on average, people with a college education make more money during their lifetime than those without, but college alone does not make one “more successful”. Guys I knew who became tradesmen were just as happy and financially comfortable as I and they didn’t have college debt. Of course, the fact that “since 1980, college tuition and fees are up 1,200%, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all items has risen by only 236%” hasn’t been lost on the people paying for college.

Or the kids who benefited from generations of inherited wealth, great schools, and other societal advantages?

It’s just not that simple, folks.

Nor is just forgiving some debt. Nice, but it doesn’t get at the fundamentals that created the problem in the first place.

My answer would be: “Take it up with the other politicians who did not have the will or the gumption to help your kids out.”

He could also point out that it would benefit the economy and enable a generation of college students climb out of crippling debt.

This is why government subsidies and bailouts are bad. The Gov. gives loans and subsidies for students. So the Universities go all, hey the Feds are paying the freight and they’ve got BIG pockets so we jack up the tuition and price of of a B.A. and the higher degrees. That’s what happens when fed and state governments get involved with subsiding services to the populace. Case in point is home solar power systems. Home SP costs 3-5 times as much as it should because government subsidies drive up the price. Take a look at whatever private enterprise that the government has subsidized and you’ll see that the prices for their services have skyrocketed.

Does this thinking apply to the people of Orange county Florida who will now be on the hook for the services Disney paid for in their special carve out of Reedy Creek? DeSantis in his attempt to punish Disney for exercising their free speech has shifted the tax burden to the surrounding county. DeSantis is presenting a near text book case of fascism.
