A grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of Campbell’s tomato soup ( with a pat of butter melted in) topped with broken Saltines — my ultimate comfort food when I was Red’s age.
I live in the UK where fish and chips is considered our national dish. It was created by Jewish immigrants and their tradition of adding fish to meals. Another example of how immigrants can strengthen a culture.
I think we (as a country) are probably better off without an official national dish. Several sources listed “Hamburger”
Wikipedia said: There is no officially designated food, but various authors have named dishes such as: apple pie, hamburger, hot dog, turkey, and mashed potatoes and gravy.
I’ve just been reading the replies to comments I made two days ago. In one comment, I referred to the strips Fred Basset and Andy Capp. That was the second time I had referred to Fred Basset this week and someone commented “Do you actually like Fred Basset?” I do like both the character and the comic strip as do millions of others around the world which is why the strip is an international success.
Someone else asked if 1966 is my year of birth and said that he/she is two years younger than me if that is the case. Yes, 1966 is my birth year. I was born late in the year as I am a December baby.
My favourite strip is Calvin and Hobbes with Andy Capp second and two strips (Red and Rover and The Wizard of Id) in competition for third place. I have a strong affection for Fred Basset and have been reading that strip for forty-five years now as I mentioned on Monday.
I like the grilled cheese and even eat it now upon occasion some 50 odd years later. Tomato soup should only be used as an add into make other dishes. I could never eat the stuff even as a kid.My national dish would have to be smoked ribs and baked beans!!!
Now that’s an all conference grilled cheese sandwich! Just look@ that distance of the cheese stretch. Definitely first place in the cafeteria @ school. Nice technique Red!
I’m okay with the tomato soup, but I never liked grilled cheese. My favorite pairings are bacon and eggs, franks and beans, pig’s knuckles & sauerkraut, pork chops & applesauce.
Ever since they were offered to me, I have not liked cereal, milk, any kind of cheese, grilled cheese, or tomato soup. Still true to this day. I do like chicken noodle soup.
Even though I don’t personally like the tomato soup part, I think this is a splendid idea and Red should send a letter to the President suggesting this. Who knows? Of all the people who have held that office, Joe seems the most likely to show some interest.
One of my best friends in high school was the “smart, but dumb” type. He told me that one time, he wanted to make a grilled cheese sandwich, so he microwaved the sandwich. For 5 minutes. On high. I asked him what he was thinking, and he said, “every time my mom would make them, it would take her about 5 minutes”. I asked him what he thought the “grilled” part meant! For a graduation gift, I got him a “How to Cook Everything” cookbook. :D
There used to be a restaurant in Northern Virginia many moons ago that had a special dish from each of the 50 states. I remember one from the South West (Arizona? Utah?) that included Navajo Fry Bread. It was one of the most interesting places to eat (I LOVED it!). Unfortunately, NOVA, at the time, did not seem to be very adventurous. They closed before I got to try all 50 dishes.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup, with a milk and cookies chaser, is truly fine dining!

Grilled cheese and tomato soup with crackers is one of favorite cheap meals. If I can I’ll make it a grilled ham and cheese.
As for national dishes, fried chicken, pizza and hamburgers could all be considered. Everybody likes them.

Trader Joe’s tomato soup paired with sourdough and Tillamook. Match made in heaven.
