I haven’t seen any of them because I just can’t stand Tom Cruise. I found him unbearable when he was young, but when he got older the sight of him just made me want to punch things.

I haven’t seen the movies; the trailers gave the impression of “generic extreme action movie!!!!”, which is rather the opposite of what the TV show was.If the action in the TV show got extreme, it meant something had gone very wrong indeed. The classic IMF approach was to keep everything fake. Outbreaks of reality (in-show reality, that is) were unwelcome (from the IMF’s perspective) complications. The movie trailers utterly failed to convey an impression of “team of clever people methodically constructing a fake reality to snare the villain”.

    SO TRUE.

I have finally given up on any movie version of anything I ever loved, or any TV reboot of anything I ever loved. The only thing I can be sure of it will have nothing in common with the work I love except the characters’ names.

“Your mission, should you decide to accept it, will be to dangle off something… dangerously.”

“This plot will self-destruct in five seconds.”

The whole point of Mission Impossible was the team. When you kill everybody but Tom in the first 5 seconds, it’s not MI; it’s just another lame-ass “action” movie (shot very carefully to conceal the fact that the “action hero” is about 2’ tall).

And Jim Phelps a traitor? Oh, please; it is (ahem) impossible to suspend disbelief to the level needed to accept that load of hooha.

I saw the first movie. It sucked, especially the part with Tom Cruise in it. I suppose he dangles well, but even so, it’s still Tom Cruise dangling. I would rather see someone else dangle — or someone else not dangling. Just so it’s not Tom Cruise.
