I specialize in ciphers. Reading text backward is a required skill for this. And I still had trouble with elliv-cipe. I need to go back to school. Sigh.
It works in text, but speaking backward is way harder. My family used to mess around with the Windows Sound Recorder, a very simple audio program that could play recordings backward. My dad and older brother wrote out a backward answering machine message, syllable by syllable, recorded it with emphases on final H’s and sounds like that, and then we played it backward so it was, in theory, the right way ’round. In practice, it sounded like an alien attempting Human for the first time! “Hhhhallo. Yew hhhaf reeeched tha (mangled surname). Plis lif yur namehand nimBAR.”
