“my folks” seems awkward here. “the folks” or “Mom & Dad” seems better considering Marcie & Marcus are ‘steps’

If it’s a ski trip, wouldn’t it be more apt to say that it has “snowballed” ?

That’s a very medical term to use. Considering it’s meaning, maybe not appropriate to the circumstances.
