I’d like to think that is when a “lot” of people state an opinion. But “most”, geez, I hope not!

Some ask just the one question, then inflate that info into an unfounded theory from which others manufacture completely separate philosophies. Chaos rules thereafter.

when I was in school, we were told to experiment, observe and draw conclusions that would be investigated by others. Now its see what everyone else is saying, it must be right.

The trouble with ignorant questions is that they can <>i>seem to be straightforward and easily answerable. Years ago, and not for the last time, a young friend of mine asked me what was the difference between a “language” and a “dialect”. Since he was a grad student in biology, I could answer informatively and succinctly: “Exactly the same as the difference between a species and a subspecies”. He said, “Oh.” And that was the end of it. A complete meeting of minds in 12 words.

There is of course a much longer answer, in part because the term “dialect” is actually used in several different senses, so you first have to pick them apart. (For example, the regional varieties of language in China are conventionally called “dialects”, but they are in fact no more alike one another than French and Romanian, or Friulan and Portuguese, which are not called “dialects of Italian”.)

I quite favor looking online first. Search engines are less judgmental than humans.
