Rescued 2 kittens in November. Put our tree up last night… it’s been an adventure already. My dad used to wire the tree to the wall… 2 cats and 2 dogs kept tipping it over!
In 35 years, I have been lucky to only have one cat that did this. We gave up and just didn’t decorate the bottom of the tree. It became a fruitless endeavor.
Grew up on a farm, at one time we had 11 dogs and 17 cats. For some reason Mom had a rule: No animals in the house! During the winter, pets slept in the garage, in piles. The dogs and cats often didn’t get along during warm weather, but during the winter, they all kept each other warm.
My parents had a trick that worked with our cats. My dad would put at least one string of the old, large lights on the tree near the bottom. Then he would take each cat and put its nose about 2 inches from the light (not touching because you don’t want to actually hurt the cat) and as soon as they felt the heat, they would pull their heads back and he would let them go. They associated the tree with heat/danger and left it alone. May not work for all cats, but worked for ours.

They make unbreakable ornaments. There is a risk of stepping on them so you could go with just garlands.

What wasn’t that, Pearl?

I tried to get the cat in our tree. Loaded it with fake birds instead of ornaments too. She’s having none of it.

That’s why we don’t put a tree up anymore.

My tree has that disease, too. I just use unbreakable ornaments and rehang them when the cats knock them out of the tree.

If this happens every year, it’s time to buy some unbreakable ornaments.

Looks like the cat wants to live in a box ;-)

Even more dangerous since the cat can’t yell “Incoming!” as the ornaments are launched!

sadly, there’s no cure for it.

That’s one reason why I don’t bother with a tree anymore. One cat sleeps under it, the other climbs it.

This is why I always have at least one floor-to-ceiling cat tree. Cats love to climb. You can divert them but you cannot stop them.

There’s nothing like the crashing sound of a tree falling over at 2:00 am because the cat had to see what was on the top.

Get plastic or styrofoam balls! Less glass and a much smaller chance of their pup grabbing one of those balls in his mouth. Shudder.

Lost my Cyrena last year, she was almost 14. She never climbed the Christmas tree or bothered the ornaments. She was a wonderful cat.

My cats have climbed the tree, slid into the tree (leather couch), knocked the tree over (once), but never managed to actually break an ornament.
