Alice, Big Shirley tried to open the conversation with a polite ‘wuff’ and you fire your teeth at him/her. No wonder he/she is more than a little ticked off.

Serves you right, Alice. You shot those choppers at poor, lonely Shirley, so she showed them who’s boss.

Some fang wicked this way goes

My grandmother did not have a “Big Shirley” but a series of little yip dogs. I remember one that would not stop until I barked back. My voice was changing and I caught it at it’s low baritone minute of the day. That little thing yipped and ran away and hid for the rest of the day. Next time I saw it I gave a pre-emptive growl and it never bothered me after that. Our cats love those little yippers, they say they are delicious.
