Decades ago I saw an article about a store somewhere in the south where all unclaimed airline luggage, etc, was sent and put on sale. Wonder if it is still there. Should be some interesting artifacts in the dusty corners.
I have always traveled with enough essentials in my carry-on luggage that I can survive, should the airlines lose my checked-in bags.
I was deplaning on a flight to Acapulco, Mexico when the guy in front of me, noticing the amount of my carry-on luggage, boasted that he and his wife had flown millions of miles and never lost a suitcase … You know what happened to him!
As luck would have it, they were staying at the same resort I was, so I know the whole story. They didn’t get their luggage back from the airlines until the day they were leaving!!
P.S. The whole time they were there, he avoided me. It was his wife who told me all about all the trials and tribulations Mr. I-Never-Lose-My-Luggage had, trying to locate their bags.
At Heathrow I asked when I could find my luggage. The porter replied “Baggage is that way sir”. I said “We Americans call it luggage. Baggage is your ex wife”
“My hovercraft is full of eels.” Seriously, for all of your luggage do the following: On your trip to your destination print out the name and address of the hotel you will be going to your first three days. Put your name on those sheets. Put a sheet into each piece of luggage. Make luggage tags with the same information on them. Do this for every piece of luggage. Make an overnight carry on bag of some sort with enough clothing and stuff to last three days in case your luggage does get lost. Include some food like energy bars and stuff that does not need refrigeration. Make the same sheets and tags for your trip home and put them in the bags and on the tags before you depart on the return trip. I never had any luggage lost until after I started doing this. A few years ago my luggage was lost on a trip to Japan. 24 hours after landing I was notified that my luggage had been found and was being delivered to the hotel the next day. Everything was waiting for me when we returned to the hotel after a day out. Just in time for an excursion to Aomori. Good ekiben in Aomori.

I’m reminded of a sign I saw once in a news photo that said CAPAJEBO. Capajebo?? Then I realized it was in Cyrillic and it said SARAJEVO.

Good luck finding the suitcases. Their luggage is taking the around the world tour without them.

I once asked the airline if I could go from Charlotte to Seattle via Miami, Newark, Bangor, Phoenix, Kansas City, Salt Lake, Chicago and Spokane.
The told me that they could not do that. I asked why not since that’s the route my luggage took.
