That’s why Ethan used the word “technically”. I would argue that the existance of some things that are radically outside our understanding of the world suggest that other strange phenomena might also exist.
Easily observed astronomical events could provide the most convincing evidence, because they are not influenced by humans or other random events. Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 and comet Shoemaker-Levy striking Jupiter in 1994 would provide some proof, if Phoebe thought of them. Probably she could describe the heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio on Pluto, but that proof would require a longer wait. Rather than proof of time travel, such events might be taken instead as evidence of contact with a more advanced civilization.
Well, the thing is that Phoebe is a kid, and has a limited knowledge of all the things that happened between her father’s childhood and her own.
In Good Omens, a great book, and then a tv mini-series, by Neil Gaiman and PTerry Pratchett, there is a book. written by an seventeenth-century witch, that contains prophesies that not even the witch would have understood at the time she wrote them, but useful to descendants to whom she left the book. Example: “In December 1980 an Apple will arise no man can eat. Invest thy money in Master Jobbes’s machine and good fortune will tend thy days.”

Was Ethan given a forgetful spell until he would meet Marigold again in his adult life?

Try to avoid making one of those self-fulfilling prophecies. They don’t prove anything.

Phoebe is always carrying her cellphone around. Just let him see that so he’ll have a glimpse at our zombie future.
