For some reason, this reminds me of Sheldon, on “Big Bang Theory”. There used to be dialog, simular to this, periodically. Especially when Amy was dealing with him.
I used to be a member of a medieval company, we would rent our services for medieval feasts in towns to show the life of the common people and artisans. This forced us to learn a huge number of skills we didn’t know we didn’t have. Just making a plain broom that will hold for more than five minutes is a work of art. As for making thread…
None of us, individually know enough to keep our level comfort viable. It depends entirely on a combined effort and at some point that, like a chain.. will break. Sending us all into bands of roving hunter/gatherers.
This reminds me of a dream that a mechanically saavy car nut once had. He used a time machine to return to mideival days and was tasked by a king with building a car. He was given lots of resources and was somehow able to build a running automobile that looked like an early 20th century machine but the King was upset with him because it didn’t have the features that the cars in his magazines did (apparently the time traveler had stashed a few Road & Track magazines in his time machine.
My point is, even if Toby had a thorough understanding of how modern technology worked, without the materials, tools & techniques modern men take for granted, there is no way he could create even a car, much less a radio or a stove.
Nothing is as much fun as a good time travel story. My wife and I just finished reading Jack Finney’s Time and Again for our online book group; we both first read it about 40 years ago. I’m also a fan of the Back to the Future movies, and the time travel episodes of the various Star Trek series.
I recall a short story of a professors wife who uses his time machine to go back in time to buy groceries, so she can stay within budget on his college salary.

Go back to July 2020 and burn down that market in Wuhan. When it’s empty, of course.

I had a friend in Society for Creative Anachronism who made a lathe from a bent sapling and used to turn with it at festivals.

You’re too undisciplined for time travel.

Toby, you’d also have to invent electricity. Maybe binge watching Gilligan’s Island would help
