My elementary school, built about 1903, had wood floors. At least twice a year those floors were served with a coat of linseed oil. At least that’s what we (in my class) were told once when we returned from vacation and someone mentioned the odor in the classroom. The brick building of two floors also had wood framing. At the age of about 70 arsonists set it alight. All that wood and oil fueled a spectacular and uncontrollable blaze.
I remember when the local high school gymnasium was the center of social life for many small towns. Everything from community theatre to bake sales was held there.
I was surprised to find that in Holland, a lot of the new developments that sprang up after WWII had a Uni-Church where the congregations of different faiths shared a single space for worship services. What they saved in the construction of multiple houses of worship, they put into really nice Community Centers with everything from a sports complex and swimming pool to a theatre and reception hall, where the whole town could congregate.
