The first one is about the excitement of going to new places, doing new things. Very much a child’s enthusiasm, though it can last into adulthood.
The second is about doing a service for your fellow beings. And there’s excitement, big trucks and sirens. Very much a child’s enthusiasm, though it can often last into adulthood.
The third is NOT something that most kids will think is exciting or service oriented. If I found a kid dreaming of this, I would recommend a psychological assessment. Most cops start very near the spot where that second kid is… and then they are trained to fear for their lives when they’re dealing with blacks, working in a black neighborhood, etc.
There could be a pictured fourth option: A fat-cat politician in an expensive suit, with campaign money stuffed in his/ her pockets: “I wanna legislate policies that make my friends and me really, really rich.”
There are too many racist police officers. Painting them all as racist is not helping anything. There are probably just as high a proportion of racists among firefighters. Maybe a cartoon about why you need to have armed officers making traffic stops instead of insulting huge groups of people who are just trying to do their job and not racists would be useful. Ted just seems to be happy generating clicks.
Now, is that too hard to do, Theodore? All we need to do is wait another 20 years for a bunch of the uber racist cops to retire/die, then problem solved…………………………of course I may be dead, too.
That third occupation is having some PR problem now that the NRA is having funding problems. But, the South is still strong.. and, run by Republicans so there is still hope. /S
I wanted to be police detective when I was 13 or 14. In junior high I even did a project where I interviewed several police detectives at nearby cities specifically because I wanted to be one. The funny thing is that I can’t remember why I wanted to be police detective. And I don’t remember why I stopped. Something about it must have seemed cool at the time.
Saw a wry quote this weekend that seems related… If you have 1000 good cops and 13 bad cops, but the good cops don’t report on the bad cops, you have 1013 bad cops.
It wasn’t until I went away for a few hours and came back that I even noticed that these are children playing dress-up, rather than adults explaining their motivations for the jobs they hold. My fault, not Ted’s. I love the detail of the fish on the ground by the kid wearing the fishbowl.
A little over the top, Ted. Yes, there are bad cops. I had a run in with one in Mississippi as a teenager that I have detailed in these forums before. However, I also know many officers that are all very good people and benefit the community. The real problem is the fact that it has been made almost impossible to get rid of the bad ones. The oft misused phrase “bad apple” comes from the old saying “one bad apple ruins the whole barrel” meant that it was imperative to remove the bad apples ASAP. That’s not how it is being used now.
Actually, firefighting as roughly as dangerous as serving on the police. Not all are racists, but as I always told my kids: if you hear something racist, speak up. Silence is construed as agreement.

If you have 2000 cops and 4 bad cops and the 2000 refuse to do anything about the 4, you have 2004 bad cops.

If that cop wants so badly to kill blacks, why isn’t he pointing a gun at that black firefighter standing right next to him?

Ted Rall is trying to foment violence against law enforcement and should pay the price.
Cops are no better or worse than the rest of us.

Ha ha ha! You are so funny and able to lump everyone into one basket. Now do Chicago and all the killings of black people there.

The system is the problem. The training does not teach LEOs to treat all suspects equally. That’s the issue.
