I’m startled, if not quite shocked. Kelley, for all that I’m prone to reject his premises, has presented us with a competently executed cartoon with a legitimate target. I spent too much of my middle years dealing with education bureaucrats, whose priorities extended to just about everything but teaching core subjects to children. I remember with particular . . . Schadenfreude, I suppose, an all day session to establish criteria for evaluating science textbooks which concluded without a single thought about assuring that the textbooks were accurate.
I’d like to see what happens when these kids take basic biology and learn what X and Y chromosomes are. You know, when they have to “follow the science.”
I like to be somewhat informed before I make a judgment. And sometimes I don’t make a judgment at all. I have been very interested to note that gender is actually pretty complicated. The biology isn’t completely binary, in the first place, and in addition the psychology of gender identification is complex. When I was young, way back when, it was generally assumed that there were two biological sexes and that gender matched biological sex. But as I look back at the world of my childhood I can now see that quite a few people I knew didn’t actually fit that dichotomy. They didn’t talk about it, probably because they knew they would get in trouble for talking about it, and probably because they didn’t even have the words to talk about it. I remember Susie, who was in my elementary school class. She was a “tomboy”, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear today that she’s transgender male. Personally, I identify as male, but not with all the things that are supposed to be male characteristics. I don’t like sports, I like art and music, I never had fights even though I was somewhat bullied, and most of my friends were girls. I am happy to be male, but on my own terms, thank you. And I’m not threatened by the way other people feel about their genders.
It wasn’t that long ago that we were horrified by genital mutilation of young girls and now “culture” or “society” or I don’t really know who – is encouraging children to transgender. Why are schools and parents and medical people OK with this? I simply don’t understand the rationale of surgically and chemically altering the sexuality of young children before they have a chance to develop fully.

It’s a noun that’s way better than those amateur nouns.

I’d hate to be SKelley’s kids, if he had any. Sounds like they’d take after their dad.

Transgendered kids get bullied enough. Having cartoonists add to it seems unnecessarily cruel.

Per Hobbes of Calvin and Hobbes, a pronoun is a noun that has lost its amateur status.

Even the US Census keeps it simple… “are you male or female?”

Is that somebody who likes to name things?

Yeah, a major problem in elementary schools . . . NOT!

Really? Assumes teachers are so dumb as to use words that haven’t been introduced into the classroom? Judging others by your own mean standards?

People think you can just decide “I’m not a girl, I’m a boy” and it’s true. Talk about SCIENCE DENIERS.

There are two genders, you science-denier.
