Totally false claim but what should we expect from Mr. Varvel? The Seuss Foundation has ceased publishing 6 of his early works. There is no Dem Lib Socialist Feminist LBGTQ Muslim government conspiracy to ban Dr. Seuss nor any other books/movies.

I don’t see any suggestion that Varvel is claiming that those organizations are behind the elimination of the books. The foundation ceased the publication, and bookstores (and in particular Amazon, the worlds’ largest) pulled them, which is effectively banning the book, and that is what the comic is depicting.

What part of it is false, exactly?

Dr. Seuss Enterprises chose to stop publishing some books. That’s their right. Amazon is still selling Dr. Seuss books, except for those that are no longer published.

Varvel is really flogging this dead horse. Don’t forget American evangelicals got Life of Brian banned even though they hadn’t seen it and there are many other bannings based on their cancel culture.

Remember when California conservatives tried, and occasionally succeeded, in banning “The Lorax” from school systems because it treated the logging industry unfairly?

It’s hard to attach the virtue of ‘patriotism’ to folks who cling to power through lies. The Seuss books were not banned. The publisher simply exited the 20th century.

These books are not banned, the publisher has decided to quit producing them.

And if we would like to talk about banned books, we need look no further than the right wing and their righteous book burnings and record smashing and forcing books to be removed from school libraries, etc. The right has a long and infamous history of banning things they don’t like, and doing so with force if needed.

Flat out lie. The books weren’t banned. But paradoxically Varvel does prove the value of children’s books like Doctor Seuss. Children need to learn values like honestly and thinking for themselves from sources like Doctor Seuss or otherwise they end up like Varvel. Little more than a programmed drone with no defined ethics.

I bet Montana Bull can’t name all six books that are discontinued. If they are as popular as he thinks, he should be able to do that without looking them up.

I believe we have every Dr. Seuss book at home. They were favorites of my wife when she was a kid (her mom was a librarian) and the same for our children. I look forward to seeing my grandkids enjoying these books, as well, including Mulberry St., On Beyond Zebra, and the others that have ceased being published.

I also have “Dr. Seuss Goes to War”, which is a collection of his WWII editorial cartoons. This is by far the most controversial of his works. Obviously this one is not a kid’s book. Some of the cartoons do not portray the Japanese in a flattering light, understandably as we were at war with a nation that attacked us. It’s absurd that some people find these works as offensive. They need to be viewed in the context of their time.

Varvel is still pushing that lie. Just because the Seuss estate isn’t going to continue publishing some of their lesser known and openly racist books doesn’t man you can’t buy the ones out there right now. In fact, those books are literally flying out of the inventories. It was the biggest sales hike of obscure titles the Seuss estate ever had.

Conservatives used to support businesses making their own decisions… but when they are losing the public’s confidence conservatives grasp at any straw they can find so they can deflect… sad that they cannot work as hard to help their constituents who are suffering because of the pandemic…

Gary, this is a take on the subject I don’t see many other folks using. Its almost as if you put a LOT of thought into selling things to children in an alley. Explains a lot.

The purpose of pulling these books is to stop perpetuating the ingraining of racism into children’s minds. It is not a sinister plot.

People are dying, people are being evicted, people are losing their jobs, people are going hungry and Gary and the GOP are worried about a COMPANY decision to stop publishing a few titles? Commercial decision, not even political. Except in the tiny minds of the ‘right is might’ brigade.

I realise there’s no point in saying this, because truth is irrelevant to the right wing, but they aren’t “banned”. The Seuss Foundation decided to stop publishing them because they (and here’s the real stumbling block) care about hurting people.

Private entities like the Seuss foundation and booksellers decide for themselves what they want to sell. When I hear the word “ban”, I think of a governing authority prohibiting the sale, or perhaps even ownership, of the contraband. Conservatives used to champion such individual choice and private rights.

Yesterday I polled a number of people that responded negatively to right wing political cartoons. I asked “If you don’t like or agree with the cartoon or cartoonist, why do you read and comment on his strip?” Of the responses I received by yesterday evening, I was able to group them into three main types of reason.54% of responses said “To keep an eye on my enemies/The right wing is terrible”38% said “To combat lies”8% said “To prevent myself from becoming ignorant.Of the three responses, only the “to combat lies” answered not only why they read it, but also why they commented. Below is my overall response to each of the answers.“To combat lies”There are better ways to combat lies than simply stating that “The cartoonist is spreading lies.” The preferred way to refute a lie would be a PEEL paragraph. Start by collecting information on the topic, and developing a position on that topic. Then use the below to template your paragraph. Position: state the issue that you wish to argue.Evidence: Provide evidence to back up your statement, preferably from both left and right leaning sources – no source is unbiased.Explain: explain what you believe the evidence means. Be respectful, but show why your opinion is right, even if it isn’t.Link: Link the evidence and explain to the position statement with a closing statement. (e.g. “When one considers point a, b, and c, it is clear that my viewpoint is correct.”)You should send your paragraph to whoever is spreading the lies, asking politely for a retraction. If you want to post your paragraph here, prepare to respond to comments, argue your point, and maybe even change your mind. This method of commenting fleshes out your argument, and increases your chances of changing someone else’s mind, rather than a short comment, which may push others further into their opinion.

“To keep an eye on enemies/The right wing is terrible” Over 50% of the replies I received were under the belief that the right wing is always wrong, or that Republicans are your enemy. These claims, while based on today’s reality, ignore what American politics was meant to, and should, be. After the Revolutionary War, The USA left a monarchy and set up a new system so that no one person was in charge constantly. This was so that as different problems faced America the people could elect whoever they felt could best deal with the problem. Today when one votes they should weigh the which national problems are most pressing, and vote for who they think is most qualified to deal with them. The priorities won’t be the same for everyone, and whichever person gets elected reflects the majority of Americans. Today many people blindly follow a person or political party. This can be dangerous to a country. An example of this would be the many Republicans that blindly agree with whatever Trump says. However, this leads me to my next point that just because someone is a Republican doesn’t mean they support Trump, and conservatives aren’t misogynist, white, religious bigots. Firstly, the definition of Republican doesn’t mention Donald Trump, so being a Republican isn’t hingent on supporting him. Secondly, not all conservatives are misogynists and bigots. Some Muslims are terrorists. Does that mean that all Muslims are terrorists? No, of course not. Some of the nicest people I know are Muslim. So if it isn’t fair to say that all Muslims are terrorists, why is it fair to say that all right wingers are racist bigots? Republicans and conservatives aren’t your enemy because they disagree with you; if they are doing their job correctly, people who disagree with you help come up with better solutions to problems. In order to move forward in the right direction, we need to have disagreements.

The best reason I got for reading the strip was to prevent from becoming ignorant. I can’t argue with that viewpoint, but it doesn’t explain why it is necassery to comment. I spoke further with the commenter, and his reason for commenting fit in with “to combat lies”.I would like to thank Patjade, Kurtass, cpiller, braindead, Julie.mason1, RAGs, sevaar777, Say What Now?, and the others I am forgetting for responding to my questions/statements. Lets all keep the comments civil and respectful. And please, be excellent to each other,TedTheadoreLogan.
