My dad did that for us, and for four or five years it was the rink in town. Don’t remember when, but the city finally began hosing the pool parking lot. That allowed a hockey game and room for others to just skate.
I did this for my daughter, but it was 35′ × 70′ and took a couple days to fill. I just left the hose running untended (I ran it out from an inside spigot so I wouldn’t freeze the pipes).
Our town used to freeze a couple of rinks in the high school athletic field, one for hockey and one for free skating. And a very nice older lady who lived across the street would make hot chocolate and cookies and bring them over for the kids on weekends. That was 60+ years ago before the lawyers got involved.

Our parents tried to do this for my sister and me, but it doesn’t get cold enough, often enough, in Baltimore for the ice to freeze properly.

They will use it for a couple days…….then find it boring.
