My first thought on seeing this was Ira Hayes. Since he’s not explicitly mentioned I assume I’m missing some larger reference, unless Hayes is a fitting example of the subject.
I had not realized that Pappy Boyington was at least part Sioux. But looking at his picture on his Wikipedia page, it is pretty clear. I also did not remember that he had a degree in aeronautical engineering.
And Ernest E. Evans was one of the destroyer captains who took on the superior Japanese fleet at Samar and turned a debacle into a heroic stand and rout of the enemy.
Not to diminish the Native Americans who valiantly served, lots of minorities and immigrants who have been treated poorly by this country have willingly served too.

There is a new memorial on the mall in Washington DC recognizing the military service of Native Americans that was just opened today (Nov. 11, 2020).
