We once went to a State Campground, and when we checked in, the ranger told us a bear had been spotted. It was Me, my two friends, and our 5 young boys, oldest of about 8. After they went to bed, we were up drinking, and cooking some hot dogs for a midnight snack. Here comes the biggest Black Bear you ever saw, About 5 feet tall at the shoulders, lumbering through the edge of our campsite. We thought about sprinting for our cars, but the kids were all in the tents. We hit him with our spotlight, and he kept going down into the thicker brush. Less than 5 minutes later the ranger drove by. We pointed and said “You just missed him!” He told us to make sure we put our food int he cars, and to hide the coolers, because bears know that they contain food and would try to break in to the car to get it, even if they can’t semll it. Around 2 am, my toddler woke up and wanted his bottle. That was the scariest run I ever took, from the tent to the car and back in the dark! My brother-in-law said “If you ever want to go camping again, don;t tell my wife about this!”
