(Day before?) Yesterday there was news of people protesting BOTH putting off the opening of schools some places AND allowing them to open in other places. On the same day.
Either I’m not getting all the information I think I’m getting, or some people are so far beyond stupid that Trump Himself looks smart… um… almost average.
If parents are so willing to open the schools, then they need to volunteer to help keep them safe and they need to expose themselves to the same risks as the teachers.
It is a major issue not to have the daycare that school provides. In many cases, it means you have to choose between taking care of your children or working. For those lucky enough to work from home, I do not know how they can do that and home school at the same time,. Trump says, “Live with it,” so don’t expect any help from that quarter. The Federal government and this administration has washed its hands of the pandemic and abandoned you. We have to figure out a better way than just laying down and waiting to die.
Forcing teachers to go back to work in unsafe, potentially lethal conditions is not the answer either. Some school districts have NOT dealt with the issue adequately. They are using the Trump model, “live with it.” Pretend that the virus will just “go away” and conduct classes as normal.
Brace yourself for another Covid-19 spike in late August. We’ll get a reprieve for a while and there will be another spike in mid-September from all the Labor Day parties.
A good friend of mine is a teacher. He has conflicting emotions about schools reopening. On one hand, the feels the virtual classroom is not as effective as face-to-face instruction. On the other hand, he well knows that under the best of circumstances an school is a wide open distribution center for all manner of bugs, illnesses, and conditions. Therefore he is somewhat reluctant in the pandemic to endanger himself, his wife and his own three children by bringing it all home with him. (He’s also aware that a number of parents consider him as merely a state-paid sitter of their offspring, and don’t really care about his concerns, even his concerns of their offspring’s safety and well-being. That says a lot about the current American psyche, I think.)
The special education teacher and self-described “lifelong Republican” wrote an op-ed for USA Today in which she said she changed her voter registration and ended her “Republican identity” following Trump’s response to the pandemic. “When the pandemic hit, the incompetence of the man for whom I had voted and the complicity of everyone around him forced me to admit that I could no longer maintain any kind of self-respect as a Republican,” Shively wrote.
But, but it’s all about “family values”, don’t forget that! So, no birth control, no abortions no mixing gender roles. Mom’s all stay home to raise the kids while dad works. Except their economic policies require both parents to work several low paying jobs. Public Education is underfunded and attacked for being too “secular.” We lack a National Health Care System while they call themselves “Nationalists” but remember, in spite of all this…we’re #1. I won’t list what we’re #1 at, just read the news or look around. Ozzie & Harriet are long gone.
