Back before they were built into everyone’s phone, I had a stand-alone GPS unit. It had a female voice, and my wife started calling her “Miss GPS.’ But my wife also pointed out that the voice was surprisingly sexy for someone telling us to turn left on Main Street. Eventually, the name morphed from “Miss GPS’ into “Mischievous.”

I really dislike the GPS on my current car. It does not show me what the names of streets are that I am crossing or about to come up to. Just telling me to “turn left now” when they really mean a quarter mile ahead can be confusing, since I can’t see the signs on the screen at all and the real signs are too far away or possibly not there. It also keep telling me to go east when I was going for my first covid vaccination. I knew I needed to go west. So I drove for miles hearing “turn left now. Turn left now. Turn left now.” I really only needed it for the last few miles.

This goes back to the late 50s; the US Air Force ran tests, and discovered that both men and women paid more attention to a robot voice if it were female. Gene Roddenberry knew that, which is why all the “Star Trek” computers have female voices, and “Babylon 5” followed suit. Same thing with modern GPS and smartphone units.
