It is not a “cement” truck, it is a concrete truck. Cement is an ingredient in concrete, unless Calvin was talking about a truck carrying that ingredient to the concrete plant. You walk and drive on concrete, not cement.

Because this “in-” is different—it’s from the Latin “in” meaning in or on. So an inflammable item is one that can have flame on it.I love how Calvin is master of the build-up.

Hobbes said,“I had to put in that last sentence so that Puddleglum2 wouldn’t whack me with a baseball bat (metaphorically speaking).”I suppose that if you were the opposite sex, I might hit on you (metaphorically speaking).

This was the very first C&H strip I ever saw. This was before it was careered in my local paper, but someone had used the comics page of another newspaper as packing material, and there it was. Like Calvin, I thought “This ought to be good.” And I was right.

Reminds me of the time a friend and I wanted a more realistic battle scene. Took an old Lionel type train and set it up in the sand pit (oversized sand box) and loaded it with those little plastic army men. Add to this a bit of gasoline (@ 35cents/gal) spritzed over the train, a trail of gas leading up to the battle site (safety first!), and a single match (left below the child safety zone apparently). Was a great battle – until his mom came out to investigate the smoke. Guess there’s a little Calvin in all of us boys. :-)

waylingaw, they got to the point where Watterson went on sabbatical, so they started back with the very early strips.

Once upon a time, if you had a “Tiger in your Tank”, you ruled the road . . . according to the advertising of the day. I anticipated a comment or two – but it seems my peers are asleep at the alarm clock . . . nothing more important than being right there with a monosyllable or hastily conceived sentence at 1 or 2 A.M., I suppose . . .If you’re not familiar with the reference, it googles just fine. Seemed funny to me . . .
