If you are a proper environmentalist and believe in the religion of GLOBAL WARMING (Whoops, I meant CLIMATE CHANGE… whoops again, I meant CLIMATE CHAOS) then you should LOVE cutting down trees. The lumber companies plant more trees than they cut down (remember, they are greedy capitalists, they want to cut them down again and make more money and jobs). Every tree that grows and is cut down and replaced removes TONS of carbon from the atmosphere. And TREES ARE A RENEWABLE RESOURCE!!! Isn’t that what we want? Oil will take millions of years to make more, TREES GROW BACK!
I think it’s great that Jan is bringing attention to Earth issues. Kudos to her for generating this much conversation!
@jblaircox - I don’t think the issue here is really cutting down trees. It’s the extreme clear cutting that causes problems. I have been to other countries who have managed areas for lumber. They have a system where trees are selectively cut and the areas are rotated. So, wildlife has a habitat, humans have a park-like area with mature trees and lumber is harvested regularly. A win-win for all. We don’t always do that in this country.
Nab: Sounds like you had a run-in with E.L.F. - the Earth Liberation Front. They were responsible for burning a Car Dealership full of S.U.V.s a few years ago in this area. I saw ELF sprayed on one of the burning vehicles on the local news.
I agree that we need to do what we can to save the Earth, but I don’t think this comic is accomplishing anything. You can’t change people’s minds by preaching. People who agree will continue to agree, and people who don’t will think, “Oh, great, another tree hugger.”
Alix is in Oregon, which has been badly affected by clear-cutting. I’ve seen scenes like this all over the state. I’m a long way from a tree-hugger; heck, I don’t even recycle pop cans much of the time. But I can certainly see why Jan, being for Eugene, chose this particular image.
Yeah, ReFlex-76, that made up evidence sure makes it look like there is global warming going on.
Now, don’t get me wrong - global warming might very well be occurring - but I don’t think we will ever know for sure - there are just to many variables involved.
Now, as to why some folks are calling it a religion… that is because religions make up things in order to get people to follow them, and that is the bad religion type habit global warming scientists have fallen into.
Today’s comic dangerously oversimplifies forestry and timber. Some points to consider:
Nature can do this too. Have you seen the photos of the Mt St Helen’s blast zone?
Some trees can only regenerate if there is a wide opening of 10 acres or more. Any smaller, and brush chokes out the growing trees.
The most diverse environments occur at transition zones. In three years, this will likely be a lovely meadow and the area around will be crowded with insects and birds and lizards and rodents and snakes and deer and wildcats and….
Wood is one of the greenest construction materials around, because it grows back. Of course, you do have to cut the trees to get the wood.
Under-managing woods can be as unhealthy as cutting. Check out the Dead Zone around the Feather River in California. All the trees starved each other to death during a drought because there were too many for the land to support.
Not all timber harvests are clear cuts.

Nabuquduriuzhur-I share your sorrow. Interesting interlude in this comic strip as well.

This must be part of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 - right up there with the Clear Skies Act of 2003.

That’s the new way to attack science you don’t agree with and cannot refute scientifically. Call it a ‘religion’ instead.

What would impress me, global warming-wise would be photos from a few decades from NASA of the earth. Shouldn’t that be less biased?
If Al Gore really thinks California will fall into the ocean, why did he buy ocean property there?
