You know, I don’t think I’ve ever had Necco wafers. Are they “gross”?

I was once driving in or near Boston when I passed an old factory building which had these words above the front door: NEW ENGLAND CONFECTIONERY COMPANY

    Suddenly I knew! I knew!

Alas NECCO was sold and broken up. Supposedly NECCO Wafers will be making a come back but it hasn’t happened yet. Sorry Eugene.

Neither one would list as one of my favorites, but I wouldn’t say no to either

There is a certain type of candy that we call here in my house “Grandma Candy”.

It’s all that old stuff, usually without chocolate or peanut butter, that grandma always had in her dish when you visited. The dish always had a lid, and sat upon a lace doily. She’d buy it bulk, from the shop and if you did something nice, or had hurt yourself, or asked in a VERY polite way, she’d give you a piece.

Saltwater taffy, butterscotch, peppermints, wintergreen, licorice whips. Old flavors and old textures, long forgotten.

I remember NECCO wafers, and love them still. They have a special tang to them, and the crisp “crack” that they make when you crunch them up in your mouth. It’s not just the candy, the taste. It’s all about how they’re eaten.

When I was a kid I thought they were called nickle wafers. My dad used to buy them for me. Was there a roll of all licorice and/or chocolate ones?

How did the newly created imaginary friend know about Necco wafers? How does Katy know?

Saying “black licorice” is like saying “tuna fish”. Licorice is black, all other colours of it are imposters to the name.

Well it is a matter of taste, but I’d have to agree with Katy on this one. Definitely GROSSER candies :-(

They are available from some sources who stocked them after the end of production. The same company that is going to make Sweet Heart valentine candy says they are going to make Necco wafers, but after the economic tank, who knows?

The violet ones were clove flavored. I like them the best.

I never liked black licorice but I have loved nickle wafers for 60 years. Until the past 2 years they have been available in my regular grocery store.

The company that made Necco Wafers (always a favorite of mine) closed down in the middle of 2018. Did Adam stock up (“hoard”) all available goods in his area? Is there an online company (which I don’t/won’t do) that sells them? (Brach’s stopped making their Neapolitan Coconut Sundaes around 2010. I miss those. Thankfully they brought back their Jelly Nougats.)
