Perhaps 8 is a bit early, but mine got to help as kids and as teens were able to make a simple meal for themselves. Cleaning up was a later skill learned …. enforced
Both my parents worked when I was 13 and left for work before I got up for school, so I had to learn to cook breakfast or have cold cereal every morning. Later I started doing the prep work for dinner and then actually made dinner for the family. In college I had an on-campus apartment and made my own dinners, I found out later that other residents would walk past my door oatmeal times just so they could smell what I was cooking. Even today I have a reputation as a great cook and at least a few people have asked for copies of my recipes.

yes and no – teach the kids how to cook despite the mess. down the road they will need the skill. believe me right now I wish my husband knew how.
