Remember the follow-the-bouncing-ball method of showing lyrics on TV? A COVID-19 “ball” should similarly bounce over the closed caption words of Trump’s remarks.
I see there is a lawsuit against Faux News for spreading false and misleading information that endangered the public. A similar suit should be brought against Republicons.
In Wisconsin we have a Democratic governor (statewide vote) but a Republican-dominated legislature (gerrymandered all to hell). So, lucky us, we’re going ahead with our spring elections as scheduled. Here’s my LttE on the topic:
Let’s be blunt. Republicans hate it when people vote.
Their loathing for democracy was most clearly stated by right-wing guru Paul Weyrich, who laid out the case for voter suppression back in 1980: “I don’t want everybody to vote. … Our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”
Acting on his advice, Wisconsin Republicans have done everything in their power to throw roadblocks in the path of voting: blatant gerrymandering to dilute opposing votes; restricting hours of voter registration; limiting the areas where volunteers can register voters or the times when DMV offices can take your picture; moving primary elections from September to August so college students can’t vote; closing or constantly changing polling locations (especially in minority areas), preferably to places without public transportation; and of course the notorious and completely unnecessary photo-ID requirement.
To Republicans the current COVID global pandemic was like manna from heaven. It could be lethally dangerous for strangers to cluster in groups of 10 or more, so they could let nature do their dirty work for them by scaring citizens away from the polls. But only if the election were held as originally scheduled.
That’s why, given a special session of the Legislature during which they could have postponed the election (as 15 other states have done) or adopted a sensible alternative like all-mail-in voting (as Gov. Evers proposed), they literally didn’t give a minute’s consideration to either. “Vote if you dare” was their attitude.
So if you’re a public-spirited citizen who wants to vote — or an elderly poll worker who’d like to help you do it — remember: Republicans don’t just want to stop you, they want to kill you
Like I said before, with very few exceptions, it is the Democratic governors, mayors, and county executives rising to the occasion. The Republicans have plenty of blood on their hands, either because of incompetence, dishonesty, cowardice, or “other” (one lunatic in Kansas, the former head of the Kansas GOP party, called COVID-19 a “glorified cold” fer chrrissakes!). Trump himself, although he won’t admit it (and doesn’t remember it) was briefed on the serious national security threat in DECEMBER. And was publicly calling the virus outbreak a “hoax”, designed to lower his poll numbers, as recently as FEBRUARY 28th. And that was in PUBLIC! (I know that many Trump voters don’t understand modern technology, such as audiotape and videotape and the printing press, but c’mon!)
Where O where are all the libertarians, objectivists, and Austrian School economists to tell us that this is exactly the sort of thing that only the free market can solve? Clearly, those who can’t afford protective gear, social isolation, or medical care have demonstrated that they’re not fit to live, right?
THE ORANGE SWAMP SLUG must sell his spiked joy juice to his BASE by the gallon. Do they really think it will make them immune from catching the COVID-19 virus?
I’m not happy about living in a red state (Ohio), but the state has been pretty much shut down, and just when I had a haircut and dental appointment scheduled. Of course our governor has stopped all abortions. He’s extremely pro-life and this is the silver-lining for him. (Otherwise, he is doing a good job handling the pandemic.)

Those republican governors should be held criminally accountable for their unbelievably short-sighted and harmful inaction. Manslaughter perhaps?

How can you protect those who refuse to be protected? It would be funny if it wasn’t going to be so tragic.
