Some of us will survive. And I sincerely hope that our nation (and other nations) come through this well enough to continue to strive for excellence rather than mere survival. But “we” in the US and much of Europe sure did poo the screwch about doing the right thing soon enough. Which could and should be a reminder that there’s this other problem in our world that’s getting worse (though maybe not exponentially) and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. This administration, by the by, is using our distraction to ram through cuts in EPA regulations among other stellar gems of awfulness.
Yeah, this time. You know that global warming thing didn’t exactly disappear because of this. You can’t social distance from the earth, despite the Orange horror clown’s attempts to convince you otherwise.
Well, we DID survive St. Ronnie the Senile and his absolute belief that AIDS didn’t exist, we DID survive King Richard the Nix and his criminal gang, we DID survive the shrub and his attempt to destroy the Mid-East all for Oil, and we WILL survive Dolt-45 and his incompetent bungling …or, at least… SOME of us will survive…
A little perspective, in WW1 over 115,000 Americans lost their lives. We had a war time President then. Now we have a president running the numbers up due to his inabilities to deal with reality. He proclaims himself a wartime president. Sure would like to know just who/what he thinks he is at war with.
Not as many will survive as would have if this administration had DONE ITS JOB. The estimate from Fauci of 100,000-200,000 deaths is conservative at best, and I am sure he knows it.
This is not just a problem for the US. It is a global problem, and we need to recognize this and act accordingly, not as America Alone but as a leader and example for the world. When the pandemic hits developing nations, the effects will be felt by everyone.
Yep there will be a body of survivors, and life will go on. The question is whether it works as an inflection point and we come out of it more willing to try to address other long term problems besides plague, especially climate change, resource depletion and deferring massive debt on future generations to service a few billionaires or if the tribalism really solidifies and we become a world of war lords, Kleptocrats, and fascism on a massive scale.
The same self serving impulses behind the Cult of Trump was present prior to the Great Depression. It took a generation of austerity, deprivation and global war to recover. There is no way we come out of this able to just pick up the way we left off.
I worry about the unemployed. As a country, we have wanted to punish those who are unemployed, thinking they are lazy and not worthy of being coddled. This idea runs deep in the American psyche. Other countries – Canada and France for example – treat unemployment as a given, and don’t treat the unemployed as being lazy or morally bad. Now, we have an exploding unemployment pool, budgets that have been built with the idea that they will be protected by punishing those who are unemployed, and leaders who have no idea what to do – their instincts and their donors are more harmful to increasing societal good at this point. We are screwed by our own beliefs of American exceptionalism.
The same things he’s been “at war” with all his life: Truth, Reality, Knowledge, Rule of Law, and especially Justice, which should have put him in prison decades ago.
