I think Reed could do well to start with Bucky’s “speakage”

Hairy Reed? Hey, there’s a writers strike, obviously the spell checkers are honoring the picket line. Also, Reed looks to be just as cross-eyed as Bucky. That’s not as common in other breeds.

Per the Oxford English dictionary – Hey is a word in the English language to attract attention, to express surprise, interest, or annoyance, or to elicit agreement.

Pedant here! I’d like to inform Reed that formal speech is not the only correct way to use language. Sure, there’s a time and a place for using “whom” and carefully differentiating between “me” and “I.” And for some of us, it can be fun to pay attention to such things. I even try to be picky about many of these formal rules in my own casual speech. I am pedantic, after all!

But as you can see, I also think that it can be helpful to recognize when things that would be incorrect in formal usage actually become useful tools when speaking more casually. For example, I have started some of these sentences with conjunctions, to adjust how the writing flows. I also sometimes use extra commas for clarity.

There are likely rules that I’m accidentally breaking, as well. I enjoy learning about things like grammar and punctuation, but they are not the areas in which I have focused my formal studies. We all have to prioritize, and these are not a top priority for most of us.

Requirements for strict adherence to formal rules can also be quite classist, since not everyone has access to the same level of education. And of course, it’s just plain rude to correct someone else’s grammar in most social contexts.

I agree that many of us can have fun, be polite, and maintain proper grammar. Unfortunately, that is not the atmosphere that Reed is facilitating.

It’s a perfectly cromulent salutation. It’s Swedish – “Hej”. Occupies the same linguistic space as “Hello”. Darby simly can’t spel.
