Millions of animals are dying….thousands of people are joining the homeless… but it will be o k because the pols are sending that good ’ol stand by of thoughts and prayer.
The problem of anthropogenic climate change on a regional basis in the early 1950’s around the Med and northern Europe. Laws were enacted, pollution decreased, for a while. Then profit became more important than posterity. It’s getting worse, and Australia is on the hook, and not just the fires, the Great Barrier Reef is in dire straights as well. It IS global, and the next decade will see a turn around in attitude, or else.
From Wikipedia: "On August 9, 1944, the creation of Smokey Bear was authorized by the Forest Service (this date is considered the character’s birthday) …
“The living symbol of Smokey Bear was a five-pound, three month old American black bear cub who was found in the spring of 1950 after the Capitan Gap fire, a wildfire that burned in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. Smokey had climbed a tree to escape the blaze, but his paws and hind legs had been burned. Local crews who had come from New Mexico and Texas to fight the blaze removed the cub from the tree.”
The name “Smokey” itself “was inspired by ‘Smokey’ Joe Martin, a New York City Fire Department hero who suffered burns and blindness during a bold 1922 rescue”.
This particular fictional bear should not be confused with the teddy bear (a cartoon depiction of Pres. Theodore Roosevelt sparing the life of a real bear during a 1902 hunting trip in Mississippi), nor Winnie the Pooh (a 1926 book by A. A. Milne), nor Paddington Bear (originating in 1958 in the children’s book written by British author Michael Bond and illustrated by Peggy Fortnum), nor the bears so often fretted over by Stephen Colbert as the greatest threat to America.
And it should be noted that none of the above bears are koalas.

The T-dumpsterfire administration and the GOP-dirty fuel lapdogs are even now trying to further dismantle environmental protections.

Unfortunately, if that cartoon were actually a portrait from life, by now that koala would have burned to death.
