I have been told that if you are close when someone shoots one of those paint balls at you and it hits it can hurt.

I prefer super soakers, personally.
IIRC, there is a rule in Paintball matches that you are out after a body shot (head shots are verboten) Not that it’s always enforced. And if you are hit you can not wipe it off, or your done for the day.
Take a trip thru the car wash first, so you can tell when you score.
