Ah the antics of those humants! One of the gene engineers created them as a private project within the larger project to create survivors of the AGW. GMO created humans, animals and a few plants. (They were rushed, since the heat levels will kill humans, they had to be both flexible and resilient.) The humants were unauthorized as was the contamination by a GMO brain parasite to increase intelligence in all non-human life in the area. (Probably Green War agents.)
