Addressing an awful but real, very sad problem our society has now days. If you have money and lots of property the nursing homes can take—and they will take every penny, the elderly can live very well (till the money runs out). For those poorer people with insufficient funds elder care is atrocious. I worked in health care for over 30 years and have seen it first hand.
I am lucky enough to have long-term (nursing home) insurance, one of the few people I know, offered from a previous employer. I worry about losing coverage as there have been so many cutbacks at that business. Still, it does not pay for the entire cost of a nursing home — the prices are horrendous — but it will help. If your employer offers it, get it. Like all insurance, you don’t want to need it, but when you need it, you really need it.
Finding a nursing home for a friend with no savings – only medicaid (meaning she’s not 65 and possibly still working) is definitely not a humorous topic. Mrs. Whiley’s fate is in the hands of the social workers at the hospital – and even they may pressed to find a bed for her in an appropriate facility. May her social worker be knowledgeable, forceful, compassionate and a little bit clever. :(

Oh, and you’ll probably want to wipe off the mouth of the bottle first! We are firm believers in recycling!

We need a cure for old age before we need an old circus tent nursing home. Either way we need to master our death defying stunts.
