The answer is “no,” as everyone knows. Despite that he richly deserves to be impeached, we all know that #TraitorMitch’s Senate would never give him a fair trial, so there’s no point. On the other hand, I’m in favor of ongoing investigations that will lead to his massive defeat at the polls… or if the Supremes and the Electoral college overturn the popular vote, and assuming that kind of crazy doesn’t apply in Senate elections, then with a sane Senate, the House might very well impeach him.

I’m mixed. I want him impeached, tarred, feathered, and ridden out of town on a rail. Logic says otherwise. On the other hand, consider an arrest. It could be totally a mistake and you’re set free, but once you’re booked, you have an arrest record. I want a neon sign under his portrait that says “This guy was impeached”.

The problem isn’t so much the House Democrats, but the Senate Republicans, who will refuse to convict no matter what crimes Trump has committed. Going ahead with an impeachment (despite all the evidence of obvious crimes committed and ongoing) and having the Senate refuse to convict gives him a chance to say he actually beat the rap instead of the truth, which is having the jury fixed in his favor.

Blew this one. Why impeach when the Rethug Senate will never convict him?

    FreyjaRN:

Impeachment inquiry is a duty, not an option, given President Trump’s high crimes and misdemeanours. Oversight is a necessary part of the checks and balances established in the Constitution.

President Trump must be held accountable for his actions. No person is above the law. The inquiry will help establish in the public’s mind the president’s immoral and dangerous behaviors. This should lead to impeachment and his removal from office.

Further, it will help establish in the mind of the public the immorality and danger presented by the president’s supporters and enablers. They have chosen wealth and power over the “common welfare”, the common good of the American people. This should lead to further gains in the House of Representatives and flipping the Senate.

The Trumpublicans will lose their control of the Senate as their complicity in the president’s crimes becomes apparent.

What a gong show.. the democrats may as well pull a blanket over their heads in shame.. Never.. has there been such a display of ineptness. If.. we don’t soon see some butts in jail you may as well cancel the next election.

I definitely think impeachment is warranted, but NOT if it focuses only on “Russiagate”. That whole mess was almost entirely a smokescreen attempting to conceal the fact that Democrats were rigging their primaries and were minor partners in the project to completely corrupt elections.

The majority of Democrats don’t want a light shone on their own (less evil) behavior, so they harp on Russiagate, and waffle on impeachment of any sort.

Gee, top-down authoritarian regimes never have these uncertainties and differences of opinion. What’s wrong with the Dems and all their messy individuality? Why don’t they just adopt the Machiavelli model? Look how well it’s worked for Formicidae republicanensis!

Dems realize the gigantic risks involved either way they go. Their fence dancing isn’t resolving anything. The decision is difficult but that’s part of their job is to take on difficult issues, or at least it use to be. Decide if your all in on an impeachment inquiry as they did during Watergate or move on. 2020 is election approaching fast.

After listing just a FEW of Trump’s inanities (and insanities), pundit Dana Milbank spoke thusly: “Maybe the president’s mind isn’t what it once was. Maybe he misrepresents past statements to get out of trouble. Either way, while the political world focuses on the lapses of 76-year-old Joe Biden, 73-year-old Trump acts as if his frontal lobe is made of Swiss cheese.” My bet is that, impeachment or not, Trump won’t be on the ballot in 2020. Nixon needed Tricia to tell him it was time to go, and Trump needs Ivanka.

Most people cannot be bothered with research, subtlety or nuance, hence, the rise of the soundbite. What resonates with them are messages that are simple and carry emotional appeal.

The Democrats give them neither. The Republicans give them both. Beware the Ides of 2020!

I’m so tired of the Democrats in Congress failing to take action when subpoenas are ignored. When witnesses that do come in to testify spend their whole time being obstructive with no consequence. Stop telling them they will be found in contempt and find them in contempt! Start impeachment proceedings so you have some teeth. Start putting these scofflaws behind bars for a day or 2 and let them know that we’re serious. Never more than lately have I understood the phrase “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

There are 2 or 3 lawsuits pending in the federal courts that will define the amount and kind of legislative oversight the House can exert on the Trump maladministration. Precedent is in favor of the House, but the federal courts move very slowly.

The House Democrats are waiting for the decisions to start handing out subpoenas and (hopefully) fining and/or jailing the non-compliant.

Sadly, the whole process will be dragged out until the election. Trump won’t be allowed to run (hooray), but will then be beyond impeachment. He’ll face some slaps on the wrist, then fade into obscurity. Not predicting the election outcome. Pence might be nominated, but not sure about his platform. I wish he would be honest about his boss, for one.
